Digging Deeper

Before we head upstairs, it’s worth looking behind the scenes at the dining room. I had mentioned the floor joists were in the dirt, and that was not an exaggeration.

Floor joist in the dirt, surrounded by many little footprints, and one big one.

To stop the drafts, and the critters, we had to get down to a level where we could have a crawl space. And, like so many other aspects of this project, if you have the floor open, you might as well dig and pour a proper crawl space. So we did:

Digging down for a crawl space.
Reinforcing the existing foundation wall.
And creating a proper crawl space to support the new floor.
Spray foam on the foundation walls and some of the steel needed to hold up the stone wall.
Final steel structure.

  1. Eric you have made a lot of progress! Wow. You really had to go to bare bones for sure. I am so grateful for you and Toni to so carefully restore this piece of history! Love seeing your progress!

  2. Wow…. I am so impressed with all the work you have done. We have an old farmhouse (part of which was built in the 1700’s) in Western MA and have been working on it for 40 years. All of this you have done is such a labor of love. The picture of the steps from the dining room to the living room reminded me of a picture I have of all my siblings and my cousin sitting on those steps…Warms my heart.
